A computerised data management system has been developed to process the large volume of samples and data for the project. The system is of a modular design and has been based on the CIMR Sample Management System to ensure data compatibility between the two groups and to streamline further development.
As one of the first products of the SMS, the bar coding software has been released as Open Source at http://www-gene.cimr.cam.ac.uk/bms/
The system is barcode driven, the Study Nurses allocating a unique barcode number to each subject at the time of recruitment. A barcode label is attached to a Study Log held in each clinic with the patient's name and other identifiers to provide a permanent record. Further barcode labels are used on all future samples and forms in order to maintain anonymity.
